Sterilisation Wrap: Understanding the SSMMS Advantage

Topic: The structural and performance difference between SMS and SSMMS sterilisation wrap, and why SSMMS is the superior choice for modern CSSD environments.

The selection of sterilisation wrap is one of the most consequential decisions a CSSD makes. Every instrument set, every surgical tray, and every implant depends on the packaging barrier to maintain sterility from the point of processing to the point of use. Yet many facilities continue to use three-layer SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond) wrap without fully understanding the significant performance gap that exists between it and the five-layer SSMMS (Spunbond-Spunbond-Meltblown-Meltblown-Spunbond) alternative.

To appreciate the difference, it is necessary to understand the function of each layer within the non-woven polypropylene structure. Spunbond layers are engineered for strength — they provide tensile resistance, fluid repellency, and structural integrity, protecting the wrap from tearing during the wrapping process and subsequent handling. Meltblown layers, by contrast, serve as the filtration engine of the wrap. Composed of extremely fine microfibers, the meltblown matrix creates a tortuous pathway that physically traps and blocks bacteria, particulates, and other contaminants from penetrating the package. It is the quality and quantity of the meltblown structure that ultimately determines the wrap’s Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) [1].

The critical distinction between SMS and SSMMS lies in this layered architecture. SMS wrap contains a single meltblown layer sandwiched between two spunbond layers. SSMMS wrap doubles both the outer strength layers and the inner filtration layers, resulting in a material that is measurably stronger, more tearresistant, and capable of achieving a higher BFE. Independent testing has demonstrated that premium SSMMS wraps can achieve BFE values of 99.6–99.9%, providing a near-impenetrable barrier against microbial contamination [1].

It is also important to note that layer count alone does not guarantee performance. The quality of the meltblown fibers, the consistency of the manufacturing process, and the use of advanced technologies all play a role in the final barrier performance of the wrap [1]. This is why sourcing wrap from a certified, quality-managed manufacturer is just as important as choosing the right layer configuration.

Proline Medical is proud to be Australia’s premier local manufacturer of SSMMS Sterilisation Wrap, produced at our Brisbane facility in a certified Class 7 cleanroom environment [2]. Our manufacturing process operates under a rigorous ISO 9001 Quality Management System and strictly adheres to AS5369:2023 and ISO 11607:1-2 Standards. By choosing locally manufactured SSMMS wrap, Australian healthcare facilities gain not only superior barrier protection but also the confidence of a secure, domestic supply chain — a lesson the COVID-19 pandemic made abundantly clear.
